ABOUT US

The National Center on Improving Literacy (NCIL), operated by Boston University’s Wheelock College of Education and Human Development with funding from the United States Department of Education, is a partnership among literacy experts, university researchers, and technical assistance providers from Florida State University, and RMC Research Corporation.

 

Our Mission

  • To increase access to, and use of, evidence-based approaches to screen, identify, and teach students with literacy-related disabilities, including dyslexia.
     

  • To build individual and organizational capacity to assess students’ literacy-related skill, identify students with disabilities or those at risk of disabilities, and fully implement evidence-based literacy programs and professional development.

Our Mission Serves

  • Parents & Families: Help your child read and write with practical ideas and strategies based on what works.
     

  • Schools & Districts: Find evidence-based approaches and effective professional development to screen, identify, and teach students with literacy-related difficulties.
     

  • State Agencies: Develop and implement state and local structures and procedures to address challenges that students with literacy-related difficulties face in learning.

We will achieve our mission through these five overall goals:
 

  1. Identify evidence-based literacy instruction, strategies, and accommodations, including assistive technology, designed to meet the specific needs of students with or at risk for literacy-related disabilities.
     

  2. To build individual and organizational capacity to assess students’ literacy-related skill, identify students with disabilities or those at risk of disabilities, and fully implement evidence-based literacy programs and professional development.
     

  3. Provide families of students with or at risk for literacy-related disabilities information to assist such students.
     

  4. Identify or develop evidence-based professional development for teachers, paraprofessionals, principals, other school leaders, and specialized instructional support personnel.
     

  5. Disseminate the products to regionally diverse SEAs, REAs, LEAs, and schools.

OUR COLLABORATORS

We work jointly with other organizations to support our mission. These collaborations help further our goals of promoting the use of evidence-based literacy practices.

Florida Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ)

Florida DJJ and NCIL partner on a yearly comic book contest open to all students enrolled in the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) and Massachusetts Department of Youth Services (DYS) programs. 

HILL For Literacy

HILL for Literacy and NCIL partner to deliver evidence-based targeted technical assistance to State, Regional, and Local Education Agencies andfamily- and community-based organizations who request support.​

The National Center on Intensive Intervention (NCII)

NCII and NCIL partnered to create resources that provide information about screening, including our Understanding Screening infographic series.

The Reading League Journal (TRLJ)

TRLJ and NCIL partnered to disseminate Educator Toolkits, infographics, and other resources to build knowledge of and support educators to implement the science of reading.

WETA and Reading Rockets

WETA and NCIL have partnered to create many products including Tutorials and Ask an Expert videos.

Rosseta Stone, Parent to Parent of Miami, & INCLUDEnyc

NCIL partnered with Rosseta Stone, Parent to Parent of Miami, and INCLUDEnyc to translate popular family-focused literacy briefs and infographics into Spanish.
