State Education Agency (SEA) Dyslexia Legislation
Has Legislation?NoHawaii Senate Bill 2217 authorized the Hawaiian Department of Education to provide technical assistance related to dyslexia, but these provisions were subsequently repealed.
SRC120, passed in 2013, defines dyslexia, and calls for a comprehensive plan that investigates the implementation of the following items: promoting awareness of dyslexia, making available professional development, and requiring a minimum of one reading specialist per school. The law further calls for an evaluation that addresses the percent of students with dyslexia, screening and assessment practices, the amount of time dedicated to core reading instruction, and the number of schools with reading specialists.

Hawaii does not require screening.
Previous legislation established a committee to investigate support for students with dyslexia in Hawaii. See the report on findings. However, the law does not require screening, and the Hawaiian Department of Education does not address dyslexia screening on its webpage.
